Many French speak English; its even a required subject in high school. But not all the people you meet in France will feel comfortable speaking English. Some may not remember enough English to hold a conversation. So how can you be prepared? Be sure to practice and take with you some basic but helpful French phrases for travelers that will help you find your way around France. Oui, je parles anglais. (Yes, I speak English.) Non, je ne parles pas anglais.  (No, I dont speak English.) If you dont know much French, this is a very useful question to be able to ask. If they know how to speak English, theyll probably switch languages when they respond. If not, even if the person responds with a shake of the head or other obvious gestures, the negative response is still good to know. 2)  Je voudrais. . . Je voudrais  (I would like) This French phrase can commonly begin an order in a restaurant or cafe. Many restaurants have set price menus with a choice of main dish, side or drink, and sometimes a dessert. To order, you can say: â€" Je voudrais un menu. (Id like a menu.) â€" Je voudrais ce menu. (Id like this menu.) â€" Je voudrais le menu a 11 euros 50. (Id like the menu that costs 11 euros and 50 cents.) You can also use this to buy other items, food or otherwise, which you can look up on the spot in a dictionary. â€" Je voudrais une baguette. (Id like a baguette.) â€" Je voudrais un chapeau. (Id like a hat.) â€" Je voudrais ce livre. (Id like this book.) You can also use this to express what you want to do. â€" Je voudrais aller a mon hôtel. Note that technically speaking, the expression “to eat ones hat,” coined by English writer Charles Dickens, is not native to French, so you may need to explain this last one if you use it. You can, however, replace mon chapeau with various edible delicacies, such as un / du fromage (a / some cheese), du vin (wine), un pain au chocolat (a small bread with chocolate), du fruit (fruit), or de lescargot (snails). 3)  Où est. . . Où est ________. (Where is _________.) You can replace the blank with any location to which you might wish to go: â€" Où est Montmartre? (Where is Montmartre?) â€" Où est la Musée du Louvre? (Where is the Louvre Museum?) â€" Où est la cathédrale de Notre Dame? (Where is Notre Dame Cathedral?) â€" Où est lentrée du metro? (Where is the entrance to the subway?) â€" Où est le FNAC? (Where is the FNAC?) (FNAC is a very large and popular bookstore in Paris!) â€" Où est la toilette? (Where is the restroom?) Be prepared for the fact that there arent a huge number of public restrooms in France, at least not in Paris. There are a few, however; there is one underground outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, for example. If there is no restroom nearby, you may wish to go into the nearest cafe, order a snack or drink, and ask to use theirs. When it comes to metro lines, Paris metro lines are all numbered 1 through 20. So someone may refer to one of the lines as, for example, “le quatre” or “la ligne quatre.” Paris RER lines â€" like a subway fasttrack that also goes beyond city limits â€" are labeled with the letters A through E. If youre heading to the Chateau de Versailles during your stay, youll most likely find yourself taking the RER C. As a result, you might want to brush up on your French numbers and alphabet before you head over! If you carry around a map, non-English speaking French who decide to stop and help will be able to more easily show you where you need to go. 4)  Où suis-je? â€" Où suis-je? (Where am I?) â€"  Où sommes-nous? (Where are we?) â€"  Nous sommes ici. / On est ici. (We are here.) The grammatical construction is a little bit different here than with most of the other location questions so far. If youre looking for directions, are looking at your map, and cant find your present location, these phrases can be very useful. 5)  Combien coûte. . . Combien coûte ______? (How much does _____ cost?) Ça coûte combien? (How much does that cost?) Very useful if you cant find a price tag, or need to know a total! In the first example, replace the blank with the item for which you need the price. For example, Combien coûte une écharpe?  would translate to, “How much does a scarf cost?” 6)  Ã‡a coûte. . . Ça coûte ___ euros _____. (That costs ____ euros and ____ cents.) When the vendor responds to #5, of course you will need to understand him! The first number is the number of euros and the second is the number of euro cents. So for example, Ça coûte sept euros cinquante means,  â€œThat costs seven euros and 50 cents.” As with the subway numbers, it will be useful to review your French numbers here, as well. 7)  Sil vous plaît. â€"  Sil vous plaît. (Please.) formal / plural â€"  Sil te plaît.  (Please.) informal / singular When you are asking someone for help, it never hurts to be polite. These few words can go a long way! 8) Merci (beaucoup)! Merci (beaucoup!) (Thank you (very much!)) Thank you is another polite expression that makes a good first impression. Introvert Whisperer / The Boss Is NOT Your Enemy - Introvert Whisperer The Boss Is NOT Your Enemy Bad bosses are legendary figures across time and cultures. There’s a good reason for that, because there are so many bosses out there who are so terrible at what they do. Despite all of the stories, a good majority of them are anywhere from “just fine” to “outstanding.” Unfortunately, many people interact with both the good and the bad bosses as if they are the enemy. If you are in these ranks, you make the assumption the boss is no good, out to get you with nothing but bad intentions. Stop thinking this way. The problem with that thinking is that even the bad bosses are rarely “out to get” anyone. However, when bosses are faced with employees who interact with them from that viewpoint, it shows. You might think you are hiding your contempt and distrust, but it’s glaringly obvious. Being on the receiving end of this kind of attitude does nothing to build a relationship and everything to destroy it. In fact, in a New York minute. The boss is really not your enemy and is not out to get you. They do have a job of balancing business priorities with your needs. Those two things don’t always fit together, and since it is a business, the priorities of the business will win the day. I know it’s personal to you and therefore it’s easy to react to decisions that impact you. On the other hand, if you already think you’re going to get screwed, any impacting decision is going to feel like proof positive that you were right. Only, more than likely, you aren’t. If this is sounding more and more like you, consider these suggestions: Change Your Assumptions What if they really weren’t out to get you? What if they couldn’t avoid the impacting decisions? You don’t know all of the inner workings above you and you never will. Some things are unavoidable. You’re Probably More Self-Centered Than You Realize People that have these attitudes like to think that the boss sits around and thinks up ways to get you. In fact, you’d be stunned at how very little time is given to just any one individual â€" even you. What If the Boss Was Really an “OK” Person? Would your attitude change if you decided to think of them in positive terms? Probably it would. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) If You Do Have Concerns, Ask The biggest problem most people have is not seeking ongoing feedback and then letting things fester until they really are problems. You should constantly be asking how you are doing and whether  the boss would like to see you do anything differently. This can open up some meaningful dialogue. Figure Out What’s Import to the Business and the Boss You would think both of those things are the same, but not always. Obviously, the business needs to be profitable and make money. What are you doing to contribute to the bottom line? The boss also has their priorities, which usually have a relationship to the business’s priorities but are usually somewhat different. Your job should be to find out what those are and do everything you can to contribute. When you have their back, they’ll love you and your opinion about them will also be positive. Think Like a Contractor All jobs are temporary. That’s just a fact of life. If you think like a contractor, you will be adding value daily to the bottom line. Also, should you part company: all contractors know that is how business works and when they leave, they leave with the idea of returning. Repeat business (or returning to an old job or boss) happens all the time, assuming you leave with style and grace. Having the last word or becoming as fun as hugging a porcupine will not put you at the top of the rehire list. In fact, don’t expect referrals in that case, because referring someone who is a pain in the backside is the last thing anyone would ever want to do. No, there is no upside in thinking the boss is your enemy. It shows in your behavior as much as you think it probably doesn’t. Hostility, belligerence and disrespect will show up in numerous ways. If you get stuck in this mindset, you’ll create your own reality because no one, even a good boss, will ever like someone who treats them like that. He united the two parties that had been in conflict during the War of the Roses â€" the House of Lancaster and the House of York â€" after he had come to power by marrying Elizabeth of York, he himself being a Lancastrian.His reign was characterised by peace and stability â€" which is why historians tend to see him as a little boring â€" yet his concern with state finances, diplomatic alliances, and supporting English industry gave the dynasty the means with which to gain prosperity, despite the turmoil of the mid-Tudor period.Whilst helping the country to recover after the Wars of the Roses, Henry VII also enabled a move away from the feudal practices of power that had characterised the country throughout Middle Ages. By appointing Justices of the Peace â€" officials who would ensure that laws were upheld in all t he provinces of the country â€" and limiting the power of the regional nobility through taxation, he brought much more of England under central control.Check out our piece on the background to the Tudors for more!King Henry VIII (1509-1547)Where his father is known for being someone a little too fond of money and of the administrative tasks of state, Henry VIII is remembered for being one of the most charismatic, hedonistic, and headstrong monarchs in the history of England.With his early appetite for war â€" styling himself on Henry V â€" and heaps of cash piled up by his father, Henry VIII immediately went to war with France, hoping to lay claim â€" as the English had done for centuries â€" to the French throne.This didn’t go so well at all, and the emptiness of the English state treasury after numerous campaigns in France was one of the reasons for Henry’s determination to break with the papacy and the Catholic Church in Rome.That’s precisely what he did, declaring himself head of the Church of England, incidentally divorcing his first wife, Catherine of Aragon â€" which he was now allowed to do â€" and diverting all the money to the state that would have traditionally have gone to Rome. This â€" including the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536 â€" would become his most famous governmental policy and his biggest legacy.Despite this massive religious upheaval, it is said that he died a Catholic. All you need to know about the Tudors!The Six WivesWe can’t talk about Henry VIII without mentioning his wives. ‘Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived’, as the rhyme now so famously goes.Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. He was Jane Seymour’s son, the most-loved wife of Henry, and the only one that died naturally whilst Henry was still alive.Edward VI was a committed Protestant, very interested in religion and dedicated to reforming the Church of England. However, being nonetheless ten, not all of the things that were achieved during his very brief life and reign can be attributed to him.He is known for having two very powerful advisors, Edward Seymour â€" his mother’s brother â€" who became Duke of Somerset, and then John Dudley, or Duke of Northumberland. The protectorship of Somerset ended in disaster, with financial ineptitude, endless wars, and a number of rebellions that rocked the country. He was overthrown and ultimately executed.Whilst conventio nally seen as a schemer seeking to enrich himself, Northumberland â€" who was central in the plot to remove Somerset â€" brought stability back to England. He cracked down on tax collection and, in a similar move to Henry VII, ensured that representatives of central government were present in the localities to maintain order.However, stability was never going to last long, as Edward VI had always been a sickly child. At the age of sixteen, he died â€" and with his death came a new desperate struggle for the crown.Lady Jane Grey: The Nine Days’ Queen (1553)Lady Jane Grey is perhaps one of the most tragic figures in the whole of English royal history, being used merely as a pawn in a game of power.Before Edward VI died, he wrote a will that ordered a change to the succession. Rather than his half-sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, becoming queens â€" as they were both recognised as ‘bastards’ by Henry VIII â€" Edward instructed that his first cousin, once removed, Lady Jane Grey â€" H enry VII’s great-granddaughter â€" would be queen instead.Lady Jane was a committed Protestant too â€" whereas Mary was known for being a very pious Catholic â€" and Edward hoped that Lady Jane would continue his reformation. Conveniently enough, Northumberland, Edward’s advisor, supported this decision too â€" having her engaged to his younger brother, Lord Guildford Dudley.After Edward’s death, and with the declaration of Lady Jane’s ascent to the throne, many of her supporters lost their nerve â€" as support for Mary grew meanwhile. Nine days later, Mary was announced queen by the Privy Council and Parliament.Lady Jane was only sixteen or seventeen when she was executed in the Tower of London â€" alongside Northumberland and her husband. Image from 1843MagazineQueen Mary I: Bloody Mary (1553-1558)And so, despite Edward’s best efforts, Mary Tudor, Mary I â€" or Bloody Mary, as she came to be known â€" ascended to the throne. And, for the Protestants in England at the time, her reign was not a very happy five years.A devout Catholic, she immediately started to overturn the reformation measures that had been implemented by Edward and by her father, Henry. Being the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, Henry’s first wife, she was also the cousin of Charles V, the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and king of Spain.Mary soon married his son, who became Philip II of Spain â€" a character known throughout history as a deeply religious man. There was all sorts of trouble â€" including the famous Wyatt’s Rebellion â€" when he was to be known as the King of England.The new queen, whilst immediately professing that no-one would be forced to follow her religion, soon had many notable protestan ts imprisoned, and ultimately executed. This is how she came to be given the nickname, Bloody Mary â€" because of the apparent ferocity of her persecution of Protestants.She reversed all of Edward’s religious laws â€" and many of Henry’s too â€" and legally returned England to the religious jurisdiction of the Pope.Despite her marriage to Philip, she did not bear any children â€" and her reign ended when she died in 1558.Find out about life in Tudor England! And so, after the reaction of Mary’s reign, Elizabeth re-installed many of the reforms passed by Edward. She became Supreme Governor of the Church of England â€" a church which now mixed Edward’s church with elements of Catholicism â€" and made it obligatory to attend.Elizabeth is known for never choosing a husband, instead dedicating herself to her reign. With a group of trusted advisors and a strong navy â€" including many piratical elements â€" she slowly developed English power in Europe and on the high seas.As one of the longest serving monarchs in English history, she presided over a period of great stability. Her reign produced some of the greatest artistic achievements in British history, with figures like William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, and John Dee all producing masterpieces during her reign.

Accommodations for College Students with ADHD For teens with ADHD, college acceptance represents a major milestone, and one that they worked very hard to achieve. Once the admissions offer has been accepted and the celebration has died down, its time to start thinking about how your teens needs will be met once college life begins. Academic accommodations are one tool that may help students with ADHD manage some of the impairments that make college more difficult. These accommodations wont guarantee success during college, but for some students with ADHD, they can be a very helpful piece of a more comprehensive plan. When parents and teens start looking into academic accommodations, they typically have a lot of questions and very few answers. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers to get you started on this journey. What documentation is needed to qualify for academic accommodations in college? Each college has its own process for determining which students qualify for accommodations (and the specific accommodations they are eligible to receive). So, its important to reach out to the college as soon as possible to find out about their specific requirements. In general, colleges require a recent psychoeducation or neuropsychological testing report that documents the ADHD diagnosis and/or any specific learning differences and impairments that would justify the requested accommodations. Typically, a letter from a pediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychologist will not suffice in the absence of detailed test results. I tried to get my teen an IEP when he was in middle school or high school, and the school said he didnt qualify. Does this mean he wont be able to get accommodations in college? College students can qualify for academic accommodations even if they were denied an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) earlier in their education. This is due in part to the fact that college students with ADHD are offered protections through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rather than the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that covers IEPs. Who should we talk to at the college about the accommodation process? There are many offices and professionals who assist students with ADHD on college campuses, and knowing who to contact first can be a challenge. Your best starting point is typically the Office of Disability Support Services, or the individual listed as the 504 or American Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator at the institution. When should we start talking with the college about academic accommodations? The process of obtaining accommodations can be lengthy, and I always recommend that parents and students begin talking with the college as soon as they accept the admissions offer. What types of accommodations are available? Perhaps not surprisingly, the accommodations and services offered on college campuses can vary widely. Some campuses offer extensive services, and others only offer more basic accommodations. However, most colleges will at least offer the following: Testing accommodations (e.g. extended time, private testing room) Permission to record lectures and/or have a note-taker in class to capture content the student with ADHD may have missed Access to audio books Reduced course-load Course substitutions for typically required courses Should I expect my teen to complete the academic accommodation qualification process on their own? I want them to become more independent, but Im not sure theyll follow through without my help. The process of qualifying for college accommodations can be daunting, even for adults with years of experience. While its important to push your teen toward independence, now is not the time to have them go it alone. That said, your teen should be involved in the process every step of the way, and even take ownership of some of the smaller steps of the process if thats practical and feasible. ABOUT DR.
